· using the feet
It amazed me when watching food preparations how women could work in difficult circumstances. The kitchen was non- existent or just a shelter from the sun, or a place for keeping dishes. Most of the work is done outside in the open. Nobody cuts meat on a table or a board, but holds it in one hand and then brings the knife from down to up to cut it. Or the older women use their feet to help. The knife is placed between the big toe and the second toe and clasped firmly, the hands then bring the meat to the knife to be cut. It looks so easy and is a very successful method.
Singa
On the Blue Nile not far from Sennar is Singa, where an ancient skeleton was found [Singa Man]. There is a ferry that takes people across to the eastern back to get to places like Suki. The ferry is typical of ferries [panton] in Sudan and can be found at Rufaa and Tuti for example.
feeding large numbers
The Sudanese are well known for their hospitality and generosity, so when there is a wedding or similar occasion, no holds are barred.Stocks of food are bought, sheep are killed, or an ox too , chickens, fish and vegetables, spices, dry goods, oil and sacks of charcoal.Often it is the women who do the cooking, but nowadays in wealthier families a caterer may be brought in with male cooks to do the work. This is a typical scene with all the preparation done outside , cooking in large pans on charcoal.
